Description

The English Heritage survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 notes a line of tree holes and stumps on the west side of the Course. These mark an avenue of trees which were probably planted sometime in the early 19th century. A double avenue is shown on the 1814 OS map, and a triple avenue on the 1843. The treeholes opposite the N Front are likely to be later in the 19th century, they are first depicted on the 1880 OS map (20).
