Summary

Nineteenth century tree mound with apple tree planted on top and hollows from nineteenth century tree avenue recorded in field survey. The mound is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304).

Description

The English Heritage survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 notes a small circular mound NE of the walled gardens at SP6706 3822, 2.5m diameter x 0.4m high, on which an apple tree is planted. Centred around SP6725 3805 and at SP6723 3804 there are several hollows and a line of 6 which are shown as trees on the 1880 and 1990s OS maps (1).

A post-medieval tree mound is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located about 123 metres E of Vancouver Lodge and centred at SP 67065 38218, a circular tree mound is about 6.5 metres in diameter (3-4).
