  • GRAVEL PIT (19th Century - 1800 AD? to 1899 AD)

Description

English Heritage's survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 notes a large circular quarry at this location cut into the hillside and approx 20m diameter and up to 1.5m deep. The earthwork appears to have been ploughed over, and is not shown on the 1843 estate map or the OS maps of 1880 and 1900. A quarry is shown in nearby Woody park. The 1843 map appears to show a tree clump planting on the site. The quarry may have supplied the gravel for the Northampton Drive laid out in the early 19th century (B1).
