Description

English Heritage's survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 notes a large circular quarry at this location cut into the hillside and approx 20m diameter and up to 1.5m deep. The earthwork appears to have been ploughed over. The quarry does not seem to cut the narrow ridge and furrow ploughing, although the degraded nature of both of the features makes the relationships difficult to ascertain on the ground. It is not shown on the 1843 estate map or the OS maps of 1880 and 1900, although a gravel pit is shown on all of these maps nearby in Woody Park [See CAS 0420802000]. A tree clump on the 1843 plan may have been planted on the site of the quarry. The quarry may have supplied the gravel for the Northampton Drive laid out in the early 19th century (B20).
