Type and Period (1)

  • DRIVE (18th Century - 1700 AD to 1799 AD)

Description

The National Trust's Survey of Stowe undertaken in 1989 suggests that the drive created in 1730s ran from the Bell gate along the southern edge of the Ha Ha to rejoin the Oxford Drive near the Boycott Pavillions. This drive replaced the old road running NW from the New Inn to the Lake Pavillions and beyond to the Stowe manor/village. A distinct ridge runs from a modern quarry behind the temple of Venus to a point 30m behind the Lake Pavillions. The feature has been levelled between the Lake Pavillions and forms the northern limit of the ridge and furrow. The survey noted that it is too sharply profiled to be a headland and so could be the 1730s driveway (B18).
