Description

The National Trust's Survey of Stowe undertaken in 1989 notes the drive created in 1760s which ran from the New Inn to the Oxford Lodge (now the route of the Dadford Road) (CAS 420806007). The eastern end was straightened in 1775 to sweep eastward leaving the Queen's Avenue just north of the Corinthan Arch. The faint trace that remains forms the southern limit of the ridge and furrow. This drive replaced the old road from the New Inn to the Lake Pavillions (18).
The English Heritage survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 notes a a linear feature through Culley's Park, south of New Park. Between SP67553618 and SP67893626 it is a bank, 4-6m wide x 0.5m high. In places particularly at the NE and SW ends the bank is intermitant. The feature continues into New Park and runs along the edge of the quarry to the Corinthian Arch. Between SP67143613 and SP67353616 it is a hollow way, 220m long x 8m wide x 1m deep. It is most pronounced as it approaches the junction with the present Dadford-Buckingham road. This feature is thought to be the drive marked on the 1814 OS map, but out of use by the 1843 estate map (2).
