Description
In 1997, work to recreate of paths lead to discovery of the stump of a brick wall, plus three adjoining walls forming the sides of a small enclosure. The position and alignment corresponds with the east wall of the 1670s kitchen garden. The adjoining brick enclosure is thought to be the remains of garden privy. The walls form the base of a pit slightly more that 1m deep and the base of the pit is formed by a layer of concretious lime. Finds includes a number of hand blown bottles (early 19th century/). The discovery is important because it corresponds with the Sarah Bridgeman Plan of 1739 and a later map of 1788. (B18)
