Trial trenching confirmed an eighteenth century origin for the enbankment to Eleven Acre Lake

Description
A trench was dug around an urn at the head of the lake to explore the origin of an embankment. The trench revealed a gravel path on the top of the bank and half way through the section and the base of an early 18th century wine bottle together with several pieces of pottery. The trench confirmed that the embankment was constructed to confine the lake. At the bottom of the trench, the thick dark grey silts of the pair of stew ponds predating the formation of the lake in the 1720s were found. (18)
