- OBELISK (Constructed 1864, 19th Century - 1800 AD to 1899 AD)
Description
Small granite obelisk erected in 1864 to the memory of the 2nd Duke of Buckingham who was colonel of the Royal Buckinghamshire Yeomanry (20). The 1843 estate plan for Stowe shows a ring of trees in this location. The monument lies at the edge of a field with ploughed ridge and furrow. A watching brief carried out during tree planting revealed only a layer of burnt material, with no dateable evidence. There were no dateable finds to link this feature to the nearby Roman kilns (98).
