- KENNELS (17th Century to 19th Century - 1600 AD to 1899 AD)
Description
The kennels are mentioned in the 1632-1633 survey of Stowe. They marked on Charles Bridgman's engraving of the estate of 1720 and again on Howard's estate plan of 1843. The 1850 Tithe map also gives the name of Kennel Ridings and Kennels as land parcels. The OS map of 1881 shows the extent of the Kennel Riding and maps the indiviudal trees of the avenue connecting to the main plantings away to the NE. However by 1900 these trees have been felled. A small unnamed stream rises in the field adjoining the pond and joins with the main stream flowing SW from Blackpit. It is over this first stream that the kennels enclosure is depicted as having been built. A drawing of a proposed kennel block by Fairchild dated 1762 shows an elevation with Doric columns, and the legend suggest that it would could be placed to good effect in the woods where the Riding begins. Masonry from this building is said to have been removed from the area just before the National Trust took over the estate, but two fragments were found in the vicinity (19).
English Heritage's survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 suggests that the masonry fragments found in the vicinity maybe from a recent culvert. Some fragments of dressed stone near Home Farm may have come from the site. Several blocks of dressed stone lie under a tree to the S of Home farm and may be from the Kennels (CAS 0420802107) (20).
