  • MIDDEN (18th Century to Modern - 1700 AD? to 1999 AD)

Description

Twenty metres NE of Dido's Cave are three mounds or middens containing cockle shells. These may have be left over material from the the insertion of tufa into Dido's Cave in the 1790s or from the construction of another garden feature? The western midden is low and oval in profile, the eastern is circular and the largest, and the northern is largely quarried away and crescent in shape. A slot 0.4m wide was excavated through the largest midden. Oral testimony combined with the findings suggests that the middens are most likely to be raw material leftover from the surfacing of the paths in School's golf course. The area also being associated with a former car park and yard. (1)
