Description

AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS SHOW POST-ENCLOSURE FIELD BOUNDARIES AND 1 POSSIBLE HOUSE PLATFORM (B1).
Site visit on 2nd April 2011 confirms presence of earthworks. 2 well-defined parallel E-W hollow-ways and another running approximately N-S between them appear to define the side and rear boundaries of a number of properties fronting onto Church Street. There appear to be further house platforms in the western half of the field (B2).
HS2 LiDAR data identified earthworks extending north to the west side of Church View Farm (B3).

Medieval village shrinkage is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as fragmentary and scattered earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields west of Church Street in Twyford village, between the chapel on Bicester Road and Church View Farm and centred at SP 66374 26684, an extensive area of linear parallel boundary ditches, trackways, rectilinear platforms, terraced ground and blocks of ridge and furrow cultivation extends 640 metres N-S along the west side of the village (4-8).
