Description

Block(s) of surviving ridge and furrow of the parish of North Marston, enclosed 1778. Total acreage (1995): 45% survival - 887 acres; (1999): 40% survival - 792 acres. Assessment made for the Monuments Protection Programme (MPP), (further details of documentary and cartographic sources) (B1-2).

Medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located across the North Marston parish, the ridge and furrow cultivation is almost contiguous. On aerial photographs taken in 2021 and recent remote sensing data, about eighty five percent of the cultivation blocks remain visible, the remainder having been plough levelled by post-war agricultural regimes (4-23).
