  • WALLED GARDEN (earlier than 1882, 19th Century - 1800 AD? to 1899 AD?)

Description

In the late 18th century the owner of the house instructed Repton to prepare a scheme for the gardens, there are illustrations in a book published in 1796. Later altered c1800 by the head gardener. The records do not tell what style gardens they are, however pictures would indicate that they are formal gardens. The first edition 6" OS map shows a woodland garden with a pleasure/formal garden to the north of the house. There is also a walled garden. APs show that even though most of the landscape is still there it has been subdivided into different plots (B2).
Brief account of the gardens in early August 1833 (B4).
Repton was involved at Taplow Lodge, not at Taplow House - B2 duplicates information for both sites.
