Description

There has been a house on the site from the 16th century, although it has twice been rebuilt. Park and formal gardens shown on the first edition 6" OS map. From the 1950s expansion of the house and new buildings associated with its use as a convent school have encroached into the gardens and parkland and there has been much residential development in the 1960s within the perimeter of the parkland, especially around Grange Lodge which was demolished in 1966. The current 1:10,000 OS map shows the grounds to be mostly destroyed. Some (?formal) gardens remain to the south west of the house (B1).
Desk-based assessment report and walkover survey suggests that some of the original 19th century landscaping and planting may survive in The Dell, but that most landscape and garden features are associated with the 20th century convent and school (B7).
Evaluation trial trenching carried out by MoLA from August to October 2010 identified post-medieval chalk surfaces, brick-built walls and post holes in Trench 1 which are interpreted as a possible building or garden features of 17th century date. In Trench 15 a 19th century brick soakaway pit was found. See report for detail (B8).
