Description
Dimensions - Height 0120 cm Radius 0950
FLAT TOPPED MOUND SITUATED ON SUMMIT OF LOW RISE MEASURING ABOUT 19M DIAMETER, 1.2M HIGH. PROBABLY OVERLAYS RIDGE & FURROW. THIS & ITS SHAPE SUGGESTS A WINDMILL MOUND OR TREE RING & NOT A BARROW. NO TRACE OF A CONTIGUOUS MOUND (B3).
Tom Clark asserts that mound appears to be the focus for Roman roads from Thornborough, Stone and Thame, all of which are visible as stone scatters in ploughsoil (B4).
An association with the mound would seem unlikely as 1940s RAF vertical APs appear to show the mound sitting on top of ridge and furrow (B1).
A circular mound of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 406 metres NW of Putlowes and centred at SP 77883 15362, a flat-topped circular mound is about 18 metres in diameter, with the flat top being about 12 metres wide. There appears to be a C-shaped ditch surrounding the (now fenced) mound, with a 13 metres arc of gap on the E facing side, but it is unclear whether this has been formed by modern ploughing machinery going around the mound and ridging up material around the fence. If extant on aerial photographs taken in 1947, then it is not clearly visible. The mound is sited within a block of medieval/post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks that was extant in 1947 but which has been plough levelled in the post-war period. It appears to sit on top of the cultivation earthworks, thereby post-dating them. An almost identically sized mound is located about 667 metres to the ESE, so possibly these features are associated with ornamental landscape features at Putlowes. On recent remote sensing data, the mound and ditch remain extant (5-6).
