Description

Plan Form - Subrectangular.
Originally an appendage to Bierton; founded by John Farnham c.1392 (B1).
Church altered & decorated by Sir Henry Lee at end of C16 but soon fell into decay. Last burial: 1803 (B7).
In 1419 church exempted from tithes either due to poverty or Papal favour (B10).
Virtually a private chapel of the Lees (B11).
Interpretation of RCHME topographic survey. Speculation as to possible earlier origin, as early as C7 villa regalis - chapel already existed by early C12: single reference in registers of the Bishop of Lincoln; distinctive, inconvenient location on edge of the floodplain of a tributary of the Thame, set apart from secular settlement pattern. Dedication to St Peter - characteristic of early foundations (B18).
