Description

A PERFECT MOAT INCLOSING ABOUT 1/4 ACRE OF GROUND (B1).
HOMESTEAD MOAT at Great Seabrook, ABOUT 1 MILE NW OF IVINGHOE CHURCH (B2).
'MOAT' AT NGR SP 92801673( B4).
POSSIBLE MANOR SITE (SEE 01:000).



A rectangular waterfilled homestead moat measuring c 560 m by c 45.0 m overall, with arms c 10.0m wide. There is an original entrance causeway in the SE arm and the interior, c 0.5 m above the surrounding area, has much dark earth and a Md tile scatter indicating the site of a building. Published survey (25") revised (B6).
This moat has been mainly infilled and only the north-west and south-west arms now survive; these have a maximum width of 10.0m and are water-filled. The enclosed area has a maximum height of 0.5m above the surrounding level, and a central disturbance indicates the site of a former building. A water inlet/outlet cannot now be traced. 1:2500 survey revised on AM (B7).
