Description

Plan Form - H SHAPED
MANOR HOUSE, NOW 3 COTTAGES, 2 STOREYS, OF C.1600, ALTERED & PATCHED WITH BRICK. ROOFS TILED (FURTHER DETAIL) (B2).
WAS AN IMPORTANT TIMBER-FRAMED STRUCTURE. SP 814053. The Old Manor or Bell's Farm, Askett (Field No 264) a timber-framed structure, the original building being erected during the first half of the 14th century. The house was then H-shaped with a single storey hall, set between two gabled cross-wings. Three major alterations were made between the 15th and 17th centuries, and only the solar wing of the original building survived until 1969 when it was demolished. The 15th century hall unit has been re-erected in another hamlet in the same parish. Finds included two Flemish Maiolica altar vases and a 15th century Rondel dagger.
