Description

Dimensions - Length 50m, Width 40m.
Plan Form - Rectangular.
REMAINS OF MOAT, NOT IN GOOD STATE OF PRESERVATION, WITHIN WHICH STANDS FARM RESIDENCE OF LOWER FARM (B1).
MOAT SURROUNDS HOUSE ON 3 SIDES, ENTRANCE OVER NW ARM (B2).
NOW DRAINED & LANDSCAPED WITH SMALL SECTION OF NE ARM WATERFILLED. SE ARM FILLED IN: ENTRANCE MUTILATED BY LANDSCAPING (B3).
NGR to SW arm of moat.
Watching brief carried out between April and July 2008 by John Moore Heritage Services during service trenching recorded the moat fills and finds recovered from the silts suggest that the moat was kept open until the late 19th or early 20th century century. See report for detail (B8).
Possible southern corner of the moat is not on the modern or historic OS maps. Shows on LiDAR as a clear, shallow, rectilinear depression. Part-utilised by drive into farmyard. Several sections of a medieval or post-medieval moat are visible on LiDAR as extant earthworks (B10).
