Description
MOSTLY INTERLINKED BY SLUICES, FALLING TO NE. RECENTLY MAINTAINED & CLEARED. ADDITIONAL 1 NOT SHOWN BY OS AT 89881205 COMPLETES RECTANGLE OF 5 PONDS IMMEDIATELY NW OF MOAT. 2 OTHERS (ON OS) NE OF THIS GROUP (B8). 4 LARGE FISHPONDS WATERFILLED & IN GOOD CONDITION (B9). Owner reports that 3 large ponds desilted c30 years ago (spoil dumps still evident alongside ponds). Moat and small pond at NW corner of complex not desilted. Ponds and central platform heavily overgrown and partly obscured by spoil dumps (B10).
Moat and ponds are linked with modern sluices, and formerly fed by springs, are now filled from the overflow from the nearby Grand Junction Canal. There are no retaining banks, the site being nearby level arable land, but there are few indications to show how the spoil was disposed of when the moat and ponds were first dug. Published 1:2500 survey revised (B22).
