Description

MOATS & SITE OF OLD MANOR HOUSE SHOWN ON 1844 MS PLAN 1844 (B2).
IRREGULAR MOAT CONSISTS OF POSSIBLY 3 NEARLY RELATED ENCLOSURES (B5,B11).
HAS RECENT HOUSE STANDING IN IT. HEAVILY WOODED-TO BE CLEARED OUT SHORTLY. NE SIDE HAS DOG LEG - ?2 PHASES (B8).
GOOD CONDITION (B9 ).
Owner reports moat not desilted c30 years ago (B10).

Homestead Moat and fish-ponds SW of Upper Farm, mark the site of the former manor house (B4).
Homestead Moat and four large fishponds, water-filled and in good condition. No traces were found to indicate the site of the manor house. Moat and ponds are linked with modern sluices, and formerly fed by springs, are now filled from the overflow from the nearby Grand Junction Canal. There are no retaining banks, the site being nearby level arable land, but there are few indications to show how the spoil was disposed of when the moat and ponds were first dug.
