Summary

Medieval moat recorded in field survey, approximately 120m north west of Elmbrook Manor, Marsh, Great and Little Kimble cum Marsh. 50m by 84m and raised 1m above the surrounding area. The moat is 10m wide and at least 2m deep. An outer bank 2m wide is the the upcast from the moat. The moat is crossed by a causeway in the eastern corner. A depression to the east may be the remains of a fishpond. Pottery dating from the late Saxon and Medieval periods has been found on the island. Scheduled

IN 1972 HOLDING SOME WATER. ARMS 8-12M WIDE. NO TRACES OF BUILDING (B3).

A subrectangular moat of medieval date is visible9-1-3) on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 120m north west of Elmbrook Manor, Marsh, Great and Little Kimble cum Marsh, and centred at SP 81328 09300. This subrectangular moat is visible on aerial photographs as a clear earthwork in the 1940s and as a wooded area on modern aerial photographs. The moat measures approximately 72x110m at its largest and the ditches are approximately 8-12m wide. This moat is very close to the site of two fishponds (see MBC1303) and possible plot boundaries associated with the hamlet of Marsh (see MBC47820) which extend to the east of the moat. Modern aerial photographs show mature woodland extending across the whole area; the earthworks are very clear on lidar visualisations. (9-11)



(SP 81330930) Moat (NR) (B12).
A homestead moat, centred at SP 81330930; at present holding some water, but for most of the year it is marshy. Sub-rectangular in plan, it measures, overall, 110.0m NW-SW by 68.0m transversely. The arms are 8.0 to 12.0m wide. The island is under long grass; there are no traces of a building. A rectangular waterfilled depression to the E, at 'A' SP 81380935, measuring 27.0m by 10.0m., may be a Md fishpond. Published 1:2500 survey correct (B13).
