- MANOR (Medieval to Post-Medieval - 1066 AD to 1798 AD)
Description
IN 1086 THE MANOR OF AKELEY WAS HELD BY 'ROBERT' OF WALTER GIFFARD, WHO BESTOWED IT, TOGETHER WITH NEWTON LONGVILLE, ON THE PRIORY OF LONGUEVILLE, NORMANDY (B1-HAS MANORIAL HISTORY). NGR TO MANOR HOUSE (B3).
A late C15 or early C16 timber framed building, with a rebuilt service end nearer the road, to which a large 17th century kitchen wing was added, remodelling the original accommodation. The building had the stacks built in stone and brick before the timber frame was piecemeal encased in stone in the late 16th or 17th century. Probably the original manor house for Akeley (B5).
