Description

Dimensions - Length 26m, Width 18m.
Plan Form - Subrectangular.
Grade II. House. C14-C15 hall in central block, altered and extended with cross wing to east C16. C16-C17 cottage at right-angles to W incorporated, C20 linking block added in angle. Coursed rubble stone, timber framed gable end to cottage, old tile roof to main block, shingles and slate to cottage roof. Large stone stack to N. side of hall with two square brick shafts set diagonally. Similar paired shafts to centre and side of cross wing and S. gable of cottage. Single shaft to W. gable of hall. Two storeys, cellar under cross wing. S. front has four irregular bays with C18 barred sash windows under timber lintels. Left-hand bay has paired casement to ground floor and first floor dormer above. Second bay has two storey projecting gabled porch with small windows to side walls in dressed stone surrounds with cornices. Modern outer door, inner door of old oak boarded and studded, in moulded frame. Right-hand bay gabled and projecting. Modern single storey extension to left. Irregular E. front has three sash windows to ground floor, wooden mullion and transom windows to first floor and stairs, and central doorway in stone arched surround, probably re-sited. N. front has 3-light leaded oak mullion window to right of stack, two paired leaded casements to ground floor and overhanging C20 passage extension to first floor. Modern door in angle to right. Cottage has two storeys and two bays, 3-light oak mullion windows with some leaded panes in lower left and upper right hand bays. Interior: centre part originally open to roof, has single cruck to centre N. with corbel moulding just below first floor and upper section on arched brace with simply carved circular boss at apex in first floor room. Partitioned and divided into two storeys C16. Tudor arches to doorways and stone fireplace, moulded beams, stop-chamfered joists. Cross wing has collar and tie beam trusses with arched braces, possibly once open to first floor room. Ground floor room to S. has similar beams and joists. RCHM II p 296 MON 3 (B6, B8).
