Summary

Remains of a possible second century Roman villa recorded in a sewer trench at Bury Farm and subsequent excavation trenching - A Roman villa was partially excavated in 1973. The site was badly eroded but some wall foundations remained. Evidence for first century occupation was provided by a scatter of Belgic pottery. Third century Romano-British pottery, samian ware, roof tiles, floor tiles, hypocaust tile and painted plaster was also found.

EXCAVATION OF WALLS SUGGESTED ASSOCIATION WITH A C2 AD BUILDING ALTHOUGH REMAINS WERE SPARSE. FULL EXCAVATION REPORT, PLANS, SECTIONS, CATALOGUE OF FINDS (B5).

SU 967968. Romano-British sherds, tile and walls were found by Mr D Humphreys in a trench dug for a sewer (B1).

SU 97029683. Roman rim sherd found 1973. SU 96769687. Rim sherd of Roman mortarium found. Both picked up by M E Farley, and are in Buckinghamshire County Museum. (No Accession numbers). (B9)

In 1973, limited excavation by Mr D Humphreys (a) and the Chess Valley Arch. Soc. on the line of a sewage trench at SU 96709683 revealed foundation trenches, c 1.0m wide, of a substantial, but as yet unidentified Roman building.
Due to the limited nature of the excavation the presence of walls was not established. Much roofing and hypocaust tile was found, together with pottery dating from Belgic to 4th Century AD.(B10)

SU 967 968. Bury Farm. Part of a villa excavated as a training scheme for school children.(B4) The area excavated in March 1973 was badly eroded but some wall foundations were noted. Unstratified finds included Roman floor and roof tiles, painted plaster. A thin scatter of Belgic pottery indicated 1st century AD occupation and Samian and 3rd century Romano-British pottery was also found. (B1 & B11). Excavation report and catalogue of finds (B5).
