Description

1698 estate map shows manor house - large square ?late Tudor/Jacobean building approx at NGR (B1).
Ancient manor house of brick, of no great extent. Similar in appearance to Toweridge, former seat of Dormer family (B2).
Estate map schematic & telescoped. Probably demolished on completion of West Wycombe House (B5).
An alternative site identified by English Heritage earthwork survey of 2000-2001. The westerly approach to the lake includes a large ride, known as the 'Broadwalk' with a pronounced but heavily disturbed platform towards its eastern end. The platform is defined by a north-west facing sinuous scarp 0.4m high that extends for a distance of 45m. The platform is a relatively prominent feature when viewed along the line of the drive and covering an area of, at least, 500 sq m., it must represent the remains of a once substantial structure. Survey suggests that this may be the site of the earlier, Dormer residence. There is much anecdotal evidence to place it in this general location and this is given further credence after a consideration of its depiction and location on the 1698-1710 estate map (B8-10).
