Description

Dimensions - Radius 0014 m
Plan Form - CIRCULAR
'WINDMILL HILL' (LOCAL NAME) STOOD CLOSE ON S SIDE OF 'WINDMILL LANE' (B1).
EXCAVATED IN THE BELIEF IT WAS A 'LARGE BARROW' IN 1896, WHEN ITS DIMENSIONS WERE 90FT DIAMETER & 5FT 9IN HIGH (B2).
DESTROYED SHORTLY AFTER BY RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION. NGR TO CENTRE OF FIELD (B1).

(SP 635 297) A barrow known as Windmill Hill stood within 2 or 3 yds of the road bridge over the railway in the parish of Chetwode. The circular mound 90 ft in diameter and 5 ft 9 ins high was surrounded by a ditch. Prior to destruction by the construction of the railway cutting, a trench was made through the mound to just beyond the centre in May 1896. Masonry foundations were found near the centre, and these coupled with finds of pottery, churchwarden pipes and buckles etc, would indicate a 16-18th c mill site. Twenty-seven ft from the S at a depth of 2 ft a few fragments of red pottery, one or two showing a rim were found. A Mr C H Read of the BM agreed that they "seem to be Roman". On the natural soil near the centre of the mound was a 6 ft square of charcoal; no bones, pottery or metal were found. Further excavation below this surface layer showed no sign of a cremation (B2).

Completely destroyed (B5).
