Description

C1872 DURING DIGGING OF A VAULT IN CHURCHYARD, A CHALK COFFIN FOUND C/M BELOW SURFACE. MADE OF CHALK SLABS APPARENTLY BUILT OVER BODY LAID ON BOTTOM OF PIT. (ILLUS). IRON RINGS & NAILS FOUND WITH BONES. SIDES OF 2 MORE CHALK COFFINS SEEN BUT LEFT. 1866: ANOTHER COFFIN. FOUND WHILE REBUILDING PORCH (B5).
