Description

IN 1281 MERTON PRIORY LEASED A FULLING MILL WITH DYERS ISLAND ('INSULA TINCTORI') TO JOHN THE DYER. THE ISLAND, LATER KNOWN AS 'TENTERETT', NOW PART OF GLEN ISLAND. IN 1523, THE FULLING MILL WAS LEASED TO JOHN HOLDERNESS, WHOSE FAMILY WERE TENANTS UNTIL 1605, WHEN SIR HENRY GUILFORD OBTAINED IT. LEGAL DISPUTE OF 1612 SUGGESTS THE MILL HAD BEEN OUT OF USE FOR SOME TIME (B1-3). NGR to Taplow Mills.
Detailed historical notes and 1930s condition. Paper Mills working in 2006 while Fulling Mill pumping water (B13).
