Description

A sumptuous very French fountain with nudes and a huge cockleshell. Made for Lord Astor by Ralph Waldo Story (B5).
Grade II+. Made for Lord Astor by Thomas Waldo Story 1897. Three groups of statuary around a large shell dish set in round pond (B7).
Shell Fountain or Fountain of Love. According to Lord Astor, the female figures around the shell are 'supposed to have discovered the fountain of love, and to be experiencing the effects of its wonderful elixir' (B20).
