Description
'Gasometer' at NGR. Site now has school swimming pool built on it (B11).
Watching brief carried out by Oxford Archaeology during service trenching from October 2002 to April 2003 identified a number of remains of brick foundations and a brick-lined tank with cast iron pipe, probably associated with the former 19th century gasometer (Trench 2). See report for details (B26).
'Gasometer' shown on 1st edition 6-inch and 25-inch OS maps at NGR.
Gasometer present on the 1881 – 1899 OS maps indicating a private gasworks to Stowe House. The gasworks were built for the Duke of Buckingham by George Bower of St. Neots. Nothing visible survives, but a written inventory of the gasworks survives (B74).
