Description

Description & location plan (B7).
Grade I. Gate piers c1730 by Kent, moved to present position later C18. Large rusticated piers with a semi-circular headed arch, carved coat of arms in frieze pediment overall. Small outer pavilions added by Valdre. Vermiculated quoins, and keyblocks. Ogee roofs with ball finials (B14).
A watching brief carried out during the digging of trenches to allow a new water pipe to be installed south east of the Lodge revealed no archaeological deposits or finds (B18).
The National Trust Survey of Stowe undertaken in 1989 noted that the western pavilion is a lodge and eastern a pedestrian gate. The gate priers were probably designed by Kent and built about 1730. The gate originally stood between the Boycott pavilions and was moved here in 1761. The lodge added at the end of the 19th century. It was also noted that wall running from southward from the Lodge contains a lot of reused masonry (B19).
