Description

Grade I. Probably by Vanbrugh c1725, moved to present site by 1754. Group of four Ionic columns on a podium surmounted by a statue of the then Princess of Wales, later Queen Caroline, possibly by Rysbrack (B14).
The National Trust Survey of Stowe undertaken in 1989 noted that under the monument there is a vaulted chamber divided longitudinally by a wall. It is said to be the remains of an icehouse, but this is perhaps unlikely as the entrance is on the west side and icehouse entrances were usually on the east and north sides (B18).
