Grade I. Pair of stone pavilions flanking the southern vista. Circa 1730 by Vanbrugh. Pedimented porticos each on four fluted doric columns, with decorated friezes, approached by stone steps. Moved further apart and altered circa 1760 by Borra (B14).
The National Trust's Survey of Stowe undertaken in 1989 notes that there is a small one storey classical style lodge behind the eastern pavillion (B18).
Dendro-dating obtains a felling date range of 1713-1740 for timbers from the west pavillion. A felling date of 1763 was for timbers associated with the moving and reconstruction of the pavillion (B34).
Included in English Heritage's Buildings at Risk Registers. In 1999-2002 described as priority D: ''Slow decay; solution agreed but not yet implemented' (B37-39).
