Description

Grade I. Circa 1737 perhaps by Kent. Small stone obelisk with a trophy of comic masks and surmounted by a monkey supposed to be holding a mirror. Erected by Lord Cobham as a memorial to his friend Congreve, the playwright. Stands on a small island in the Octagon Lake (B14).
The National Trust Survey of Stowe undertaken in 1989 notes that a statue of Congreve once leaned against the obelisk but is now missing, and that the monument now stands on a 19th century island in the Octagon lake (B18).
