Description
Grade I. Rostral doric column c1748, moved to Elysian Fields 1750's surmounted by statue of Heroic Poetry, one of the Nine Muses (by Nost?) which stood round Bridgeman's earlier parterre in front of the house (B14).
The National Trust's Survey of Stowe undertaken in 1989 notes that the column is decorated with the beaks of Roman war ships. The column was erected in 1748 to honour Captain Thomas Grenville, Lord Cobham's nephew, who was killed during active service. The original lead statue was of Hercules, but this was replaced by one of the nine muses from Bridgeman's parterre (B18).
