Map

Type and Period (1)

  • HILLFORT (Early Iron Age to Late Iron Age - 700 BC to 42 AD)

Description

Dimensions - Radius 110m.
Plan Form - Subcircular.
Double concentric ditches visible from the air, probably a univallate or bivallate hillfort. Runs into cultivation terraces (CAS 01272) on the south side of the hill (B1).
Cropmarks plotted at 1:2,500 (B2).
Proximity of Cheddington hillfort to Ivinghoe hillfort is interesting. Cheddington is larger: 5 hectares, compared to 2.1 hectares for Ivinghoe. Was one a replacement of the other? Ploughing has destroyed internal features. [See article for discussion] (B3).
Scheduled: SM 29410 (B4).
Included in English Heritage's Heritage at Risk Register 2009 and 2011. Condition desribed as 'Extensive significant problems ie under plough, collapse' with principal vulnerability from arable ploughing and trend as declining (B8-9).

Aerial photograph taken in July 2010 clearly shows the northern ploughed half of the hillfort as a cropmark with hints of an inner rectilinear enclosure (B10).
This record includes National Record of the Historic Environment Information provided by Historic England on 4 June 2025 licensed under the Open Government Licence (B11).
