Earthwork survey and research by English Heritage and University of Leicester for the Whittlewood Project suggests that Lamport developed as a regular settlement along the major north-south valley, with a second focus to the west along the east-west and southwest-northeast trackways . It may have originated in the late Saxon period as a small market centre along a major route. See report for detail (B14).
