Summary

Late Iron Age and Roman settlements recorded in excavation - An Iron Age to Romano British enclosure with pottery and brooches was excavated by the Manshead Archaeological Society. A cobbled area and a mass of Roman pottery was also found. Two unusual features of Roman date were also found.

Description

QUARRY OPERATIONS REVEALED 2 DITCHED ENCLOSURES: 1 IMMEDIATELY PRE-ROMAN, THE OTHER ROMAN. TOPSOIL REMOVAL LEFT SUBSOIL FEATURES (PITS, DITCHES, WELL) & COBBLED AREA (B1-2,5). COPIES OF SITE PLANS &C AT BCM. ALSO SLIDES (B3). IRONWORK FROM SITE AT BCM? (B2). RE-ASSESSMENT & RECORDING OF SITE (B5).


SP 944143. An Iron Age ditched enclosure which yielded lots of Belgic pottery and brooches and continued well into Roman times was excavated by the Manshead Arch. Soc. A cobbled area with no defineable boundary but with Roman debris in the cobbling was also noted. A mass of Roman pottery was found in the enclosing ditch. The odd features about this site were two tanks. One was pit with thick clay lining, the other a square of continuous posts which seem to be an above ground tank. They were about 6' square (B6).
