Description

Plan Form - CURVILINEAR
THE OLD MOAT, SURROUNDING THE HOUSE IN THE CIVIL WARS FOR THE PURPOSE OF DEFENCE, & ON ACCOUNT OF WHICH THE PROPRIETOR OF THE ESTATE INCURRED PROSCRIPTION, HAS BEEN CONSIDERABLY IMPROVED BY BEING ENCLOSED WITHIN PARK-LIKE GROUNDS OF 50 ACRES IN EXTENT (B1).
THE LARGE RECTANGULAR POND WITH CENTRAL ISLAND, S OF THE HOUSE & 'MOAT' IS MARKED 'FISHPOND' ON 1981 OS 1:10,000 MAP & IS SHOWN (BUT NOT DESCRIBED) ON ALL PREVIOUS EDITIONS. IT IS LIKELY TO BE CONTEMPORARY WITH THE HOUSE & MAINLY ORNAMENTAL (B7).

(SP 79410278) Moat (NR) (B13).
The Manor House at Horsenden was moated 'about' and garrisoned for King Charles. Horsenden House dates to the 15th/16th centuries according to the owner, but it is externally 18th century in appearance and modernised. Not outstanding. There is no local information of an earlier house on the site. The bowl-shaped waterfeature to the E and S of the house is ornamental, and in common with the rest of the grounds, appears to be the result of garden landscaping. There is no trace of a moat, or civil war works in the vicinity (B14).
