(SP 794023) Moat (NR) (B8).
A Homestead moat, in Roundabout Wood Saunderton (B3)
SP 795024. 2 moats. Very large scale fish ponds including 2 dams. 5 house platforms and track. Bounded by extensive ridge and furrow. Visited Jan 1971.
Indications of a small DMV site. A single sub-rectangular waterfilled homestead moat, measuring overall c 65.0m NW SE by c 50.0m transversely. The arms average
c 8.0m in width. No trace of a structure was found within the tree-planted enclosure apart from a small scatter of Md tile. Straddling a stream on the NW side of the moat is the remains of a fishpond series which appear to be contemporary, with an average depth of 1.2m.
There is no coherent pattern of a deserted Md village in the vicinity, although much rig and furrow is visible. A small area of disturbed pasture centred at SP 7941 0230 probably the remains of enclosures, is apparently connected with the moated site. To the E and S of the moat are a number of earthworks farming large ornamental ponds which are now dry. These are the result of former Horsenden Estate landscaping. Published survey (25") revised. (B9, B10, B11).
NRHE insert 1997 (B12).
