Glaze

A glassy surface given to objects, usually to pottery, by coating them with powdered glass and reheating them to a temperature where the glass begins to fuse. Apart from improving the appearance, this renders the naturally porous earthenware impermeable. Potters started to use glaze from the medieval period onwards. Medieval to post-medieval glazed pottery has been found in many places in Buckinghamshire, for instance at Hill Farm, Little Horwood.
