Cordon

A strip of clay applied to the surface of a pot before firing. Most commonly it will form a simple hoop round the vessel, but wavy and geometric designs are not unusual and even scenes with figures can occur. The cordon often bears a series of finger or stick indentations along its course. The name is also used for horizontal ribs round beaten metal vessels, although these are produced by a very different technique called repousse.
