Auger

A tool used for extracting a small sample of deposit from a depth without actual excavation. In simple versions soil is brought up in the thread of a drill bit. In more elaborate ones a chamber can be opened to collect a core after the drill has bored to an appropriate depth. It is much used for collecting peat samples for pollen analysis.
