Taphonomy

The term taphonomy has two slightly varying meanings in archaeology. It can be used to describe the study of processes that have affected organic substances after death. An example would be an analysis of butchering or scavenging evidence on animal or human remains. More generally it can refer to processes that have affected any item of archaeological significance after its final deposition that have affected the position and condition of the item.
