Strap fitting

Any fittings that are found upon a strap, these can include items such as the end piece that stops the leather fraying or the buckle which fastens the strap. Strap fittings are made of metal and can date from the Roman period. The more functional fittings are made of iron whilst finer items have been found made of precious metals and with fine decoration.

A Late Iron Age to early Roman strap fitting, which may have been a piece of horse harness, was found near White Cottages at Lillingstone Dayrell, whilst a fifth to eighth century Saxon example was found southwest of Monks Risborough Station. A thirteenth century strap fitting was found near Ellesborough church.
