Mace

A mace is a heavy weapon, generally made of stone and consisting of a large protuberance with a central hole through which it is hafted onto a wooden handle. The end could vary in shape but many were round in form. Maces were first used in prehistory but use continued, largely for ceremonial purposes, in the medieval and post-medieval period when they became more ornate and tended to be made of precious metals. The only maces known in Buckinghamshire date to the prehistoric period, such as one found in Hulcott Rectory garden and the other found at Colstrope Farm, Hambleden.
