Lock-up

A lock up is a structure, generally located in villages, for the overnight accommodation of drunkards and criminals. The local constable was usually in charge of administering the facility and could charge people for the privilege of being incarcerated. Lock ups were generally in use in the 18th and 19th centuries and were funded through County or local money. They came in a variety of forms but commonly had few windows, were strongly built and single storied, some were octagonal or circular in shape with an ornamental appearance
