House platform

A house platform is the term used to describe the area of flattened ground, sometimes raised, upon which a structure has previously stood. Also called a building or hut platform, they can date to any period from late prehistory onwards. The shape of the platform depends upon that of the building constructed on it, some are small and circular whilst others are rectangular much greater in extent. House platforms are often associated with hollow-ways, field boundaries and fishponds as part of deserted settlements or a medieval or post-medieval date. There are many house platforms in Buckinghamshire, several at Hoggeston and near St Mary's Church in East Claydon, for instance.
