Description

Dimensions - Length 1600cm, Width 1300cm, Height 50cm.
Plan Form - Oval.
Remains of tumulus (B1-2).
At NGR (B3).
Not located (B4).
Flattened oval mound: ditch represented by narrow levelled area 1m wide around base. Slight traces of 2m wide external bank on N & E. Cross-shaped trench cut into mound centre: Scott's excavation (see CASS 00296) has altered original form. Survey (B6-7).
Condition survey 2000 (B8).
Geophysical surveys carried out by Bartlett-Clark Consultancy in September 2002 and June 2003 identified ditch-like anomalies, possibly from the barrow ditch although irregular and incomplete. See detailed report (B10).
Barrow has the appearance of pond barrow, but cross-shaped depression may indicate a windmill base (B12).

A probable windmill mound on Whiteleaf Hill survives as an earthwork 18m in diameter and 0.5m high. The remains of a ditch up to 3m wide and 0.3m deep are visible on the north and south sides. At the centre of the mound is a cross-shaped depression. In the absence of (recorded) excavation, the possibility remains that this feature may originally have been a round barrow which was subsequently utilised as a windmill mound (B13-14).
